How it works

Three simple steps from zero to a live website on your own CITCS subdomain.

1
Build your site
2
Deploy to Vercel
3
Claim your subdomain

Option 1: Host with GitHub + Vercel

The recommended path. You get version control, easy updates, and a professional workflow.

Step-by-step guide

1
Create a GitHub account Go to github.com and sign up if you do not have one yet.
2
Create a new repository Click "New" and name it something like my-portfolio. Make it public. Initialize with a README if you want.
3
Upload your website files Add your index.html, CSS, JS, and assets. You can drag and drop files directly on GitHub or use GitHub Desktop.
4
Connect to Vercel Go to vercel.com, sign up with GitHub, click "Add New Project", and import your repository. Vercel will build and deploy it automatically.
5
Get your Vercel URL Vercel will give you a temporary URL like my-portfolio.vercel.app. Save this. You will need it for the subdomain step.

Option 2: Host without GitHub

Vercel lets you deploy directly from your computer with drag-and-drop. Great for quick experiments.

Step-by-step guide

1
Build your website locally Create your index.html file (and CSS/JS if needed) on your computer. Make sure everything works by opening index.html in your browser.
2
Sign up on Vercel Go to vercel.com and create an account using your email or Google account.
3
Drag and drop your files On the Vercel dashboard, click "Add New Project", then choose "Continue with Template" or drag your project folder directly onto the upload area. Vercel will deploy it instantly.
4
Copy your Vercel URL Once deployed, Vercel gives you a URL like something.vercel.app. Keep this URL. You will use it to connect your CITCS subdomain.

Claim your subdomain

Once your site is live on Vercel, request your own CITCS subdomain.

Your address on the web

Every CITCS student can claim a subdomain in this format. It is yours for as long as you are part of the department.

www.yourname.citcs.site

How to set up your subdomain

1
Make sure your site is deployed Complete either Option 1 or Option 2 above. Your site must be live on Vercel with a working .vercel.app URL before requesting a subdomain.
2
Choose your subdomain name Pick something professional like www.johndoe.citcs.site or www.jdoe.citcs.site. Avoid numbers or special characters if possible.
3
Submit your request on Discord Join the UC CITCS Discord and post your request in the subdomain channel with your full name, student ID, and Vercel deployment URL. An admin will configure the DNS record for you.
4
Add the domain in Vercel Go to your Vercel project dashboard → Settings → Domains. Add your requested subdomain (e.g. www.johndoe.citcs.site) and follow Vercel's verification steps. The admin will approve it on the DNS side.
5
Wait for DNS propagation It usually takes a few minutes to a few hours for your subdomain to work everywhere. Once active, your site will be live at www.[yourname].citcs.site.

Other hosting options

All of these platforms let you connect a custom subdomain like www.[yourname].citcs.site to your deployed site. Pick the one that fits your workflow.

Netlify

Free tier Drag & drop

Deploy by dragging your folder or connecting a Git repo. Add your custom subdomain in Settings → Domain management.

GitHub Pages

100% Free Git-based

Push to a repo and enable Pages in settings. Add a CNAME file with your subdomain and configure DNS.

Cloudflare Pages

Free tier Fast CDN

Connect your Git repo for auto-deploys. Add custom domains in the dashboard and manage DNS through Cloudflare.

Render

Free tier Full-stack

Deploy static sites, Node.js, Python, and more from Git. Add custom domains in Settings → Custom Domains and point DNS.

Buy your own domain

Want something more professional than a subdomain? Custom domains are surprisingly affordable. Here are common options and where to buy them.

Why buy a domain?

A custom domain like johndoe.dev or johndoe.me looks more professional on resumes, portfolios, and business cards. You fully own it, and it works with any hosting provider you switch to in the future.

1
Pick a registrar Namecheap and Cloudflare Registrar are the most recommended for students. Namecheap has a clean interface and good support. Cloudflare sells domains at cost with no markup.
2
Search for your name Type your desired domain into the search box. If johndoe.com is taken, try alternatives like .dev, .me, .xyz, or .site. These are often cheaper and just as effective.
3
Connect to your host After purchase, go to your registrar's DNS settings and add a CNAME record pointing to your hosting platform (e.g. cname.vercel-dns.com for Vercel, or your-site.netlify.app for Netlify). Your host's docs will have the exact value.

Common domain prices (approximate, yearly)

Prices vary by registrar and promotions. These are typical first-year costs from Namecheap as of 2025. Renewal prices are usually higher.

Domain 1st Year Price Best For
.xyz $1 – $13 ~$13 Cheap experiments, student projects
.site $1 – $8 ~$15 General websites, portfolios
.me $4 – $15 ~$20 Personal branding, portfolios
.dev $15 – $17 ~$18 Developers, technical portfolios
.com $6 – $14 ~$14 Most recognized, professional
.info $3 – $5 ~$20 Budget option, info sites
.online $1 – $5 ~$18 Modern alternative to .com
.ph $40 – $70 ~$50+ Philippine businesses, local branding

Tip: Namecheap often runs promotions where .xyz and .site are under $1 for the first year. Cloudflare Registrar has no markup but requires using their DNS.
